Edge Based Video Content Analysis
Federal, state, local government and commercial enterprises now have a new weapon in their video surveillance systems’ toolbag – video content analysis (VCA) from Leverage Information Systems.
VCA, sometimes referred to as video analytics, enables video surveillance systems to analyze live or recorded video streams to detect predefined suspicious activities, events, or behavior patterns. With this capability, security professionals can now address potential security threats based on real-time data.
Leverage makes video content analysis possible by moving the intelligence out into the field devices – cameras -- instead of transmitting all captured video to centralized servers for analysis, which caused processing and bandwidth performance slowdowns. By embedding video content analysis into the security device, such as network cameras, new capabilities are now available to operators.
Leverage’s video surveillance system uses an ASIC-based codec platform to analyze and compress video. At the core is an encoder that processes video very quickly and enables the compressing of video. The result is video that takes a lot less storage capacity.
Armed with this technology, Leverage customers are using VCA -- either in live situations or when viewing recorded video -- for a variety of purposes:
- License Plate recognition – Security officials are using VCA to “read” license plates to identify suspicious activity or individuals
- Motion Detection – VCA can search automatically through a recording to identify and view any significant motion that occurred based on pre-defined areas of interest
- Theft Detection – Removal of objects can be detected as well as the time of the theft
- Congestion Detection – Security officials can take actions based on congestion detection, such as when metro station platforms become too congested
- Article Leave Behind (abandoned object detection) – Security officials are effectively using VCA to detect when an object has been left behind, such as a suitcase left unattended at an airport.
- Shape detection – Using shape recognition VCA operators can help detect various shapes, such as vehicles on a road and when they are moving through the monitoring zone.
